Examination of the Camera Shots

Over the shoulder shot/Medium shot:
Looking from behind a person at the subject. Used in this case because there might be a conversation between the people or show the characters point of view.

A new year 7 student approaches a bully. He thinks that he knows the bully so he decides to greet him. He pulls out a 'spud' to acknowledge him.

Over the shoulder:
Slightly closer than the first pic but still over the shoulder. However now it is not a medium shot as you can't see the waist of the people speaking. This is still used for communication or show the characters point of view.

Slightly intimidated by his so called 'friend', he regrets the decision to approach him. His hand is grabbed so he cannot escape.

Medium close up shot:
The medium shot shows the action taken place between the two characters. You can see the setting that is happening clearly as well as the characters's expressions.

The bully goes in for the punch that could injure the young person. The bully clearly has something that irritates him about young students starting off high school.

Medium shot:

This shot is capture the emotions shown by the character's body position and how significant the event was.It is normally used to help the viewer understand the situation.

Clearly hurt by the impact, the year 7 boy clutches on tho his face. He is starting to realise what a big mistake it was trying to speak with the bully. The bully is clearly pleased with his work.

High Angle:

This angle is to show how weak the person is. High-angle shots can make the subject seem vulnerable or powerless when applied with the correct mood, setting, and effects.

The year 7 boy 'passes out' for a minute by the impact of the collision. The expression on his face indicates that he is unemotional and simply 'flat'.

Long shot:

A long shot (sometimes referred to as a wide shot) typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings.

The bully is now being told to leave the kid alone or he might be in serious trouble. At first the bully wasn't scared but when he looked at the kid, he realised that he was wrong.

Establishing Shot:

An establishing shot is usually the first shot of a new scene, designed to show the audience where the action is taking place. It is usually a very wide shot. The shot shows the school entrance to the block.

The bully is sent on his way towards his next class knowing that he should 'fix up' his behaviour.

Marvel Avengers: Age Of Ultron - Analysed

Marvel Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Language:
The camera angle is facing up to them. This is showing that the characters are superior and really important for the movie. Also the word 'Avengers' means inflict harm in return for an injury or wrong done to oneself or another. This is to do with inflicting harm upon the opponent. The word 'age' is used for the title. This indicates that this is in another time or it has futuristic conventions. It also shows that it might be in another dimension as it states a different time and place happens in this movie. The font that is shown in this poster also shows that it is futuristic as it has a modern touch to the poster. Especially on the words 'Avengers' and 'Age of Ultron' really stands out as a sci-fi movie. It really shows off the genre of being a futuristic film which is important as it attracts attention from the font.

Institution:

The poster shows of who created this film and who is the production company that is behind this movie. It is placed at the bottom of the poster where it is shown clearly. The film was produced by Kevin Feige and directed by Joss Wheedon, who is well known in their field of work. It was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures which is a multi-national institution. This movie had a previous film made called Marvel Avengers Assemble. This was a huge success so they made a sequel. Their budget was $279.9 million and made approximately $1.402 billion through box office.

Audience:

This looks like it would be targeted at an audience of mixed gender (although perhaps slightly more male) An adult age range might apply due to the content which includes explosion and death. I think with all the sound effects and video effects would make people who are generally young people go see this movie. Also the target audience could be for people who are into Action, Sci-Fi and people who are into heroic films because the way how the people pose for this picture indicates that they are really important for their service to protect the world.

Representation:

This poster shows that the young white males who are generally strong are the main characters in this movie. This is not unusual as most movies include a young, white male who tries save humanity from the apocalpse. Also you see spaceships which indicate that this is based on a another time.

The Maze Runner - Analysed

The movie I will be analyzing is called The Maze Runner.

The sub-genre of Science Fiction this film fits into Dystopia, Thriller and Action/Adventure Drama. The conventions in the movie typically specifies why this is a common sci-fi movie. The basic happening of a sci-fi action movie appears a lot in this movie. The loss of something... Getting it back.... A sudden twist....and a climax. However, some might say that it isn't a typical sci-fi movie as it has elements of conventions that happen in the movie that doesn't normally happen. For example, Thomas (the main character) lost his memory like all the other people who are trapped in an area where no one has thought of and is planning a way out. But the Creatures named Griever start hunting down the troopers, providing the action. This movie provides the edge of seat, popcorn throwing type of movie.

What happens in the film?
Thomas wakes up in an elevator with no memory of his past, other than that his name is Thomas which he recovered a few days later. When the elevator doors open, he is pulled into a glade by a group of teenage boys who also have no memories besides what they should be called just like Thomas. Thomas is introduced towards the surroundings by the leader of the group called Albi. He is introduced to everybody when he is encouraged to have a fight with Calli. Outside the Glade is the Maze, a labyrinth of high walls covered in ivy that holds strange, lethal creatures known as Grievers. The boys are trying to stay alive as well as "solve" the Maze by running through it as fast as they can while tracking movements of the walls and trying to find an exit to escape. However, Thomas is more curious about what happens inside the maze than protecting himself. After Thomas's arrival, a girl is delivered through the elevator into the Glade, and lapses into a coma. When Thomas comes to visit her Newt asks him if there is any recognition, Thomas knows that he knew her and is trying to think of her name when a voice inside him starts talking to him as if the girl was saying it, this is how Thomas learns her name. To make matters worse, her arrival triggers everything in the Glade to change: the sun disappears, the deliveries of supplies stop coming, and the doors of the Maze stay open at night, which allows the Grievers to enter the Glade and hunt the children. So they decided to fight for there live by entering the cave after an exit plan was cleverly thought out by Minho and Thomas. Only a handful survived however Thomas was left emotionless after his friend that he was close to in the camp, Chuck dies after Calli has been stung by the griever.

How is the setting linked to the science fiction genre?
The setting reminded me of an abandoned area where you use your survival skills to survive. However it is different as it felt like a doomsday event. This reminded me of how people impersonate how the future is going to be like if it goes terribly wrong. A lot of big name producers and directors do that to their films as it automatically grabs the audience attention. The labyrinth/maze is also eye appealing as people don't use these conventions in real life compared to sci-fi where it normally happen. It's sort of like summer camp in the a slightly more ideal circle of Hell.

How are the characters linked to the science fiction genre?
The main character who is the hero is of the movie a typical white man who's bravery is shone throughout the film. It is basically what happens in most movies as a white teenagers gets the plaudits over everyone else. This always happens inside a sci-fi movie. All the characters behave like the world is ending and have to survive. But only when the white man turns up, they have the belief to do something great.

What narrative themes are linked to the genre (e.g. alien invasion, dystopian future etc.)?
The dystopian future links towards the genre of Sci-fi as it is out of the ordinary and not normally occurs in the real world. The disaster and the anguish are themes that often occurs in Sci-fi films.

It is mainly directed towards the teenagers and the young adults because it can relate to them. Frankly, that also may appeal to the movie's target audience. "The Maze Runner" is the first dystopian teen movie in a while that offers boys a room of their own.

Why this movie would be successful?
Sometimes you have to look at it from a business point of view. What do people nowadays want to watch? What movies stick into people's mind and never being forgotten? I think it is comedy. The thought of having an adventure, science fiction movie with also comedy is priceless. Also this movie isn't like most movies. Movies that are science fiction tend to be boring. So if it was comedy more people would like science fiction and the overview of science fiction won't be as terrible. One last point is that people love Kevin Hart films so if he is in the film then more people would want to watch this movie. The whole movie would be comical and funny. It is a journey that brings people closer together and have a fun time. The main reason why I love this film to become real is that I believe that people would say " What a film!" or " That was so funny!" after they watch this movie!

Textual Analysis: Science Fiction

District 9

Genre:
District 9 fits both alien invasion and thriller. It puts people off their seats and the drama takes over attention. This film empathises what science fiction is all about. Thriller because it grabs the persons attention which is good for a successful film.

Key conventions:
There is a huge numbers of indication that this is a typical sci-fi film. One indication is that there is aliens involved and they speak in different languages. Also there is a large spaceship in Earth which normally happens in sci-fi movies. Also there is many special effects in this movie also. These are like the basic needs to make a sci-fi movie as special effects is a must.

Target audience:
I think the target audience for this film is from teenagers up to adults in their late 30's. This isn't a horrific film however I think it is not suitable for young children. Also I believe that this film can be enjoyed by both genders.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Genre:
Guardians of the galaxy fits both sci-fi and drama as it keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the movie. There is also a hint of romance when the vigilante falls for the green woman. This movie is dramatic and also unreal which is needed in a sci-fi film.

Key conventions:
There is a huge numbers of indication that this is a typical sci-fi film. There are different species in this film for example Groot can only say Groot. Also there is a possible invasion of different planets which can cause havoc towards the whole galaxy. There are different creatures which is fascinating. The main reason I think why it is a sci-fi movie is that there are different plots in the movie that are unearth like. This definitely grabs the person's attention.

Target audience:
I think that the target audience for this movie is young adults going up to adults in their 30's. This is because there are situations in the movie that are unsuitable for the younger viewers for example the mass destruction of planets. Also there are some romantic scenes in this movie which could suggest that the female gender would enjoy it also.

Home

Genre:
This movie has a mixture of different genres. The main genres are Comedy, Sci-fi, Adventure and Animation.
I believe that a mixture of these genres are good as it is appealing towards the public. With these genres, it can appeal to a lot of people.

Key conventions:
The movie has a lot of spaceships and aircraft that is way beyond our technology which suggest that they are in another world. Also aliens travelling from different planets to find a place to call home is also a typical science fiction conventions. Mainly, it has a touching feeling that sometimes is dramatic which also occurs in science fiction movies.

Target audience:
The target audience is mainly for the younger viewers but it can also can be classed as a family movie too. It can give a person goosebumps about the characters care about family which can bring a family close also. That is why I think that this movie is for the family.
